The Certified Prevention Specialist, IC&RC, must have 100 contact hours of prevention specific training. Fifty hours of the training must be Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drug (ATOD) training. Six clock hours of training in prevention-specific ethics also is required. There must be 120 hours of practicum in the five (5) performance domains (minimum of 10 hours in each). The five domains are:

  1. Planning and Evaluation
  2. Education and Skill Development
  3. Community Organization
  4. Public and Organization Policy
  5. Professional Growth and Responsibility

Most colleges and universities do not offer classes in prevention nor are there official practicums offered (which are required). Prevention is an exciting field that can change the norms of our society. Families, parents, individuals and children can be empowered to change their environment with tools that we know now change the way we make important decisions. If you chose to become involved in this profession, not only will you learn new tools to assist others, but also may find that it has changed the way you make decisions.

The Prevention Practicum (120 hours) is designed to assist the prevention student in application of the information that was gained during the Prevention Specialist Certification Training.
